Michael S. Batts
Michael S. Batts is a partner in the firm and primarily handles matters involving estate planning, estate and trust administration, federal and state taxation, and tax-exempt organizations. Mike’s clients come from a wide area of eastern North Carolina. Mike has consulted with clients on estates of all sizes, from very large to rather modest. He also represents clients before IRS and North Carolina tax departments in audits and other reviews. Mike spends a good portion of his practice in estate planning, but also works with businesses and individuals on a variety of federal and state tax issues outside the estate and inheritance tax fields.
Mike is a native of North Carolina, born and raised in Rocky Mount. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1980 with a B.S. in Business and a B.A. in Chemistry. After graduating from college, he worked as an industrial engineer for Blue Bell, Inc., for four years in the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia. Mike then returned to Wake Forest University and graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1987. Mike then attended the University of Florida and received a degree of Masters of Laws in Taxation in 1988 before returning to Rocky Mount to practice law with his father.
Mike is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in North Carolina as well as the United States Tax Court. He was recognized by the North Carolina State Bar as a specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law in November of 1995, and still retains his certification. Mike is also a member of state and local professional associations, the East Carolina Estate Planning Council, and the Eastern North Carolina Inn of Court.
